Job Summary

The post holder will lead and facilitate the development of efficient, effective high quality and patient focused services for all patients requiring urgent and emergency care.

Working as part of the Divisional Leadership Team, alongside the Divisional General Manager and the Divisional Director, the post holder will be professionally, operationally, and managerially responsible for nursing in urgent and emergency care.

Through strong clinical leadership the Head of Nursing for Urgent and Emergency Care will support the Emergency Department, SDEC and AMUs to promote excellence in nursing care, to maintain and improve clinical standards. The post holder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond. Partnership working is a priority in supporting the delivery of a seamless and integrated service for patients and their families with identified health needs.

Essentials

  • Understanding of CQC to a high standard
  • Understanding NMC Code of Professional
  • The ability to liaise with the Patient and Liaison Service (PALS) on patient care issues.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Provide visible operational leadership, guidance, support, and direction to clinical staff within urgent and emergency care.
  • Ensure that staff within the division understand the relevant performance and access targets and lead, manage, and motivate staff in the delivery of those targets.
  • Provide clinical leadership to staff within areas of responsibility, ensuring implementation of and compliance with policies and procedures including safe staffing across Urgent and Emergency services ensuring the delivery of high value, family centred, responsive and efficient patient care.
  • Be responsible for advancing clinical practice across theTrust.
  • Communicate with service users, their family/carers and significant others withempathyandreassurance,particularlyaroundemotionalandsensitive issues
  • Ensure the safe custody, supply and administration of drugs and therapeutic substances in accordance with Trust policy
  • To be competent in managing emergency situations including directing other members of the team
  • To be competent in clinical skills including enhanced practice relevant to the clinical area
  • Comply with the complaint’s procedure of the Trust in respect of own area
  • Promptlyreportallincidentsoraccidentsinvolvingpatients,visitorsorstaff and take appropriate action according to Trust Policy
  • Contribute to the philosophy and continuous development of the clinical area
  • Provide strong and consistent leadership to staff - professional role modelling
  • Manage the delivery of patient care quality and experience ensuring an integrated approach with partners within health, social care, education, acute and third sector services
  • To lead development of innovative care pathways for the management of Urgent and Emergency care including SDEC and AMUs
  • Prepare and deliver service/contract reviews as agreed, reporting on the performance of services within area of responsibility.
  • Support service to ensure effective leadership and management of resources, including budgetary responsibilities.
  • Monitors pay and non-pay spends from available finance data ensuring the Divisional Leadership Team is aware of any actual/potential financial concerns for escalation.
  • To deputise for the Chief Nurse and Deputy /Associate Chief Nurses when required
  • Complete Practice Supervisor and Assessor training and act as a practice supervisor and assessor providing supervision to junior staff, student nurses and other learners
  • To lead and support staff to work across patient pathways, encouraging and fostering joint working to facilitate seamless transition of care for patients, the principles of self-care and community engagement where possible
  • To lead on transformation, innovation, and change programmes as part of national, network and Trust wide programmes and inspire clinical staff to engage in these.
  • Represent the Trust at Local and National forums promoting achievements in patient care and service delivery.
  • Be responsible for the line management of matrons and lead nurses within the division.
  • Demonstrate you support the mental and physical health and well-being of your team through knowing them and their behaviour and acting promptly in response to signs of a mental health or physical health condition.
  • Ensure that staff receives feedback, from audit, investigation of complaints and clinical incidents to encourage staff to think creatively about new ways of working to improve patient’s experience
  • Working in conjunction with the matrons, lead nurses and Practice Development Team to develop and implement a training strategy which will be tailored to the workforce strategy of the division
