Senior Safety Advisor
Job Summary
The Senior Safety Advisor is responsible for Leading the development of the Health & Safety and Risk programmes in the Trust. Supporting senior members of the Risk & Patient Safety Management Team
The post holder will:
- Provide advice, guidance and instruction regarding safety and risk issues within the workplace, to ensure that the Trust meets and exceeds the statutory obligations required.
- Support the continuous development of Safety and associated Risk Management policies within the Trust.
- Perform site specific safety audits of workplace activities / functions and provide analysis of data, reporting findings and preparing reports in order to promote safe working practices and conditions.
- Support department managers in undertaking their responsibilities with regards to safety issues.
- Work closely with key staff to ensure that safety issues are properly co-ordinated and communicated to staff.
- Work to improve the personal safety of staff, including contractors and agency staff.
- To provide Health and Safety advice and support for project management, planning and design of new builds/refurbishment projects in order to design out hazards and identified risks

Pay Rates: Up to £36 per hour Umbrella or £32 per hour PAYE inclusive of holiday pay
Hours / Working Days: 37.5 hours per week / Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
- Good General education at advanced level or the equivalent
- NEBOSH Qualification in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent qualification or experience gained through relevant employment
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Knowledge and experience of working within a dedicated safety / risk management central team within the NHS
- Experience in working In the NHS taking complex minutes
- Ability to organise and deliver training programmes
- Experience in undertaking risk assessments and specialist environmental and Health and Safety assessments. E.g. DSE
- Advanced user of an incident reporting system e.g. Datix.
- Knowledge of health and safety and risk management legislation
- Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members and communicate effectively at all levels within the organisation.
- Able to work on own initiative and also as an effective team member.
- Time management skills / Presentation skills.
- General IT skills, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Positive attitude and ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise. Understanding of the processes for risk assessment, manual handing audit and incident investigation, and how they link to risk management and statutory reporting requirements.
- Able to make recommendations and monitor progress and report evaluation to stakeholders on completion
- Ability to use advanced skills in incident reporting systems to generate trend reports
- Ability to produce health and safety reports identify trends and draw informed conclusions to support immediate action and the organisations Health and Safety agenda/strategy.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- To further develop and maintain a robust COSHH process, undertaking risk assessments.
- Maintain, develop and review associated policies and other safety related documentation and resources, ensuring such documentation is widely reviewed and consulted upon.
- Take corporate responsibility for the reporting of all work-related injuries, diseases or dangerous occurrences as defined in ‘The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 – RIDDOR’
- Management and delivery of the Trust's Incident Reporting Procedures and the Serious Incident Policy ensuring incident investigation outcomes are reviewed and effective and sustained improvements through SMART action plans and QI initiatives.
- Ensure best practice with regards to incident reporting, monitoring, trend analysis, action plans and changes in practice.
- Lead on the Trust Health and Safety reporting, extracting relevant information from IT systems, liaising with colleagues across the trust to collate information.
- Analyse information and identify trends, making recommendations and ensure action plans are regularly appraised and monitored escalating noncompliance as required.
- Conduct evaluations of H&S interventions/action plans.
- As an active member of the Trust Health, Safety and Security Committee meetings you will co-ordinate the meetings and advise the committee with regard health and safety matters.
- Co-ordinate the Trust Major Incident Planning Committee meetings.
- Plan and maintain communication strategies for the promotion of Trust wide safety.
- Monitor and investigate reported accidents/incidents and near miss incidents, relevant Datix issues and recommend measures to be implemented to prevent reoccurrence.
Risk Management Data Systems
- Provide support and expertise in the day to day management of the risk management incident reporting and risk assessment data systems.
- Providing reports and support to all levels of staff within the Trust.
- Leading the coordination of the risk assessment programme across the organisation
- Providing support to the Datix Administrator to assist with the analysis of incident trends from Datix
